In 1999, Lisa Sayre established a summer camp, "Oboes In the Mountains" for young oboists. The success of this venture rapidly and consistently expanded from that date forward with the help of some of the countries leading oboe teachers, but especially with the assistance of my own mentor, Dr. Mark Ostoich, Professor of Oboe at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. In it's most current state it is officially known as Oxford Oboe Camp and moved in 2011 to Reinhardt University in Waleska Georgia, where Lisa Sayre is Adjunct Professor of Oboe. The success of the camp is due to the fantastic oboe community that have contributed valuable time and skills to encourage students in a nurturing environment to further their knowledge of all things "oboe" while having a fun time doing it! We are growing, and now include three oboe camps to meet a broader reach and variety of students.
The Midwest Oboe Camp officially began in 2011 and is moving to the campus of Youngstown State University at the Dana School of Music in 2016. Founded over 140 years ago, it is one of the oldest music schools in the United States and the first public university in Ohio to be designated an All-Steinway School. With its modern conservatory facilities, the school will be a wonderful environment to explore OBOE 101!
YSU is easily accessible from Cleveland, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Flights into Akron-Canton Ohio are the best choice and we will pick up all participants who fly into Akron-Canton Airport.
The Maine Oboe Camp premiered the summer of 2012. It accommodated amateur adults along with family members in a "playcation" during the peak summer season of Maine, my home state. Come join us at any or all of these marvelous camps.
Mark Ostoich (College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati) has been an integral part of the camp from the earliest days. Petrea Warneck (Furman University) started as a guest teacher and has become the assistant director of all three camps. Other oboists that have contributed throughout the camps' history include - Julie Grasso, Rebecca Testerman, Shelly Meggison Myers, Brian Seaton, Ginger Ramsey, Jim Ryon, James Sullivan, Pat McFarland, Cynthia Steljes, Yvonne Peterson, John Ellis, Lara Dahl, Robert Sorton, Bailey Sorton and Carlos Coelho . Many of these oboists serve either as professors of some of the finest universities and conservatories in the country or as members of major symphony orchestras. Opportunities have been provided for many of the students that have attended the camp through recruitment opportunities at many of the universities that have been represented by the faculty.
New music has always been a part of the oboe camps. Many thanks to resident composer, Charles Sayre, my husband. His music can be heard on the www.hoboemusic.com website, as well as www.charlessayremusic.com.
Glad to have a new association with the New Horizons International Music Association, a wonderful organization dedicated to music making for adults with no musical experience or those that were active in school long ago. www.newhorizonsmusic.org
